SpongeBob: Textures and Shaders
Patrick: Textures and Shaders
Sandy: Texture, Shaders, Fur Groom
Squidward: Textures and Shaders
Here are a number of characters that I was able to work on for Kamp Koral. During the early days of working on Kamp Koral I was able to establish the look of the show through a number of characters. The first character actually done for the show was Squidward. Where I used a number of squid and octopus skin photos to create a subtle speckled texture that can be seen especially around the back and top of his head. Funny enough, pretty much every character's skin in Kamp Koral is based off Squidward's custom material in Substance Painter.
The next and probably 2nd hardest to get right was Spongebob himself. It took quite a while to get the correct amount of sponge texture and subsurface to work in CG. The fact that he was much more square than previous CG models of Spongebob also lent a degree of difficulty to make him feel alive. This was in part solved through some subtle color blending across the surface to give your eye something interesting to look at.
Finaly, the most difficult character on our show has to be Sandy. There was a constant drive to get her fur to look as soft as possible, which made her have some pretty long render times for a TV show. The fur was not only hard to get looking right on a TV schedule/budget, but it also created quite an extreme limitation considering how over the top the animation is and the fact that the Xgen fur is more suited to more realistic animation styles. Overall I am incredibly happy with how all of these characters turned out, I hope you enjoy them too.
